Is anyone interested in starting up an EC12 class in Ottawa? I have been researching the possibility of ordering some hulls from the States. They seem to be a great hull and are very popular in the US. There is a fleet of EC12 in London Ontario. I have heard through the grapevine that there are some EC12 hulls in Ottawa that have not been sailed in many years. Think about it boys and do some research. Good boat for our pond as it has the same keel configuration as our M12 so OK in the weeds.

Bigger boats - nice!

I was looking into EC-12's earlier in the summer, because I thought it would be fun to have a larger boat.  The other option I came across is the S-50 (same shape hull/keel, sized between the EC-12 and Mini-12).  The S-50 is a new boat designed in Montreal by Nigel.  There are 7 of them so far, with a couple more coming this winter.

The downside - it's not a class (yet).  The only ones sailing are in Montreal (so far).  It's not as big as an EC-12.

The upside - it seems to be growing in popularity fast.  It's much cheaper than setting up an EC-12.  There are local guys (lots in Montreal and as of the spring I'll have one) to race with.  There may be EC-12's in London, but Montreal is closer!  Because it's not quite as big as an EC-12 and a fair bit cheaper, more guys are likely to get them.  It's also nice to support the local guy.

In researching this, I've been to Montreal a few times (I ended up joining their club). I've sailed the S-50, and raced against them.  They're faster than Mini-12's.

If you want to see one sail, maybe try it out - I can get you in touch with Nigel.

I've just put a new album in the photo gallery - it's called S-50 - have a look!

Hey Scot

Just sent Nigel an email asking for pics of the hull and keel. I really like the EC12 though. They are very big in Florida and that is where I hopefully will be retiring to in a couple of years and I would have my boat ready to race down there too.

Rick.  We have talked about the EC12 in Ottawa, but there is not enough interest to get a good size fleet in this area.  The new, competetive boats are very expensive, and also they weigh about 25 pounds.  We have a EC12 fleet in Punta Gorda, (Suncoast Club), but I have not taken the plunge as yet.  I sail a Soling and a Mini 12 there.  I think my next boat in Florida will be a micro magic, (21 inches), as that class is growing fast.

When are you going to have a boat ready to sail?

Bill.

Dave and I were just talking it over and were wondering if there was any interest. I am starting on my M12 this weekend and was hoping to order an EC12 around jan and hopefully have it ready for 2013. I will wait and see what Nigel has come up with and decide from there. The M12 will suit me just fine for now and keep me out of trouble.

HMMMMMMMM was just on the Montreal site and that S50 boat just might be interesting. I need more info on it for sure, like mast height, weight etc. What kind of restrictions will they put on the class? Wood masts only or is it going to be a developement class and have it more open to aluminum or carbon masts etc.... Will wait and see.

Bill - I think I saw someone's micro magic earlier in the season; looks like a fun little boat. Are you going to have a micro magic built, or build it yourself?  Either way, I'd be interested in being involved.  Let me know if there's any possiblity of that.

sorry about the hijack, Rick - now back to the EC-12 conversation!!!

Rick hope the e mail and pictures  helped

One of the key design issues behind the S50 in addition to open water performance to sail on Lake St Louise was WEIGHT!

carry a 16lb boat or lift it in and out of the water and you realize how much 16 lbs weighs

I had the fun job of launching our scale boats at the Montreal Classic boat Show this August

OK I am still on the right side of 60 but they get HEAVY!  Frank even came out with a lighter model just to address the issue:)

The invitation has been extended and is open to anyone - come down and sail one, if you want something 'bigger' with open water capabilities and developement oportunities to express your creative side it MAY be a (Canadian:)  option!

PS we sail mixed fleet on saturdays and just use a start time handycap for the S50

It looks like I can go sailing in Montreal this Saturday (leaving Ottawa around 8am, leaving Montreal around noon or 1pm) - if anyone would like a lift just let me know.

I have always liked the EC12 and for a long time wished that i owned one but now both the price and the weight gives rise to second thoughts.Has anyone sailed a Mini with its A rig against the S50 to get a comparison of performance.Again the weight of the S50 gives cause for concern.I woild also like to see a set of measurement rules as i would hate to promote a class the has yet not defined itself.

The EC12 is definitely a large and heavy boat but there are ways to launch and reteive them with a lot less effort. I am still interested in the EC12 but what I would propose is that if we as a club decided to start up an EC12 class we could limit them to 2 channels the same as our M12 and there are other things we could do to keep the cost down. We could do a mass order for masts ( everyone using the same mast) We could limit the use of carbon which would cut costs. Dave and I are truly thinking of ordering some EC12 hulls. I know we will be in the minority but we can still race our M12's. There are some EC12's out there that are not being sailed anymore. If by chance those of you that do have one read this and want to possibly sell it or are maybe interested in getting the class up and running please contact me at    [email protected]  or 613 8362979
