Did a bunch of framing today. Decided to go with a more conventional style of deck. Everything is made out of white cedar cut on my table saw. My belt sander combo disc sander sure got some use.  Will finish it up tomorrow then epoxy the compression posts in and put a coat of waterproofing on all the wood. Built one of the gearboxes today. Took 9 oz of weight out of it with lightening holes. It is a heavy brute.

How many tress did you cut down to do the framing?:) Looks good and solid and being cedar probably light as heck!

I know the guys call me weight phobic but its always a trade off between strength and durability....

We sail for fun 95% of the time so build stong! We have all seen 'heavy boats' that far outperform light weights so why worry.

Very nice job on the servo gear box. Takes me back to my bike racing days drilling out gear sets to save grams on a 20lb bike!

I have the older plastic version and  I chopped it to pieces to save grams. It has lasted years, suspect the aluminum version will still be beyond bullet proof. Going to drill out the gears to??? Might get a tiny bit more out of the total weight :)

Kevin is progressing on Scots, servos fitted, rudder done plus the aft hull framing   - I just finsihed up the glass deck skins last night and will deliver them next week at the club meeting. Been lazy this week  - need to get #13 started soon and then reopen the sail loft!

Picture 19 of 24 - bet if I called Kevin the shoe lace will STILL be undone :)

Does he have little feet or is the boat really that BIG?

Looking good and putting the jib trimmer servo on the mast support sure makes it more accesable than mine mounted forward. Hardly every have to acess it but replacing the jib sheet is NOT a job to be done beside the pond. Live and learn!

Too busy building boats to do mundane things like tying shoelaces.

The jib trimmer servo mounting seems to be a good solution. Time will tell whether it works well in service. Only a single accessible screw to remove it.

Shroud attachment rack now fabricated and backstay attachment fitted. Diamond stays rigged on the mast. I elected to go with double spreaders but with a single wire on each side. Seems to work since mast is dead straight and laterally stiff.

Almost ready for decking. Will pick up the custom fiberglass deck from Nigel tomorrow at the Club meeting. Will take #12 to the meeting so that the critics can have their say. We are seldom short of opinions, There will certainly be suggestions regarding other ways of building, but they surely must be wrong if it is not the way that I did it..

Kevin

You are doing a fabulous job on Scot's boat. It looks like you need to pour another pound or two of lead shot mixed with epoxy down in the bottom to give it more stability. looks like she might be a tad top heavy. LOL

NOT to worry... I have been providing Kevin inaccurate and misleading building instructions - NOT that he follows INSTRUCTIONS.

Been doing my best to sow confusion and insure the boat  will be a total mess that sails in circles so even  a M12 or Micro Magic will be able to pass....can't have the Ottawa fleet getting discouraged by a newby..... can we???

Won't need to much extra lead, all the exoctic woods and carpentry going on will assure it will be so heavy only a hurricane will get it moving All joking aside, Kevin brought it to the meeting last night - It is another beautiful 'Goom' rendition to his usual standards

Rest assure Rick - I did make sure the decks are as heavy as possible . They are the latest in metal/ composite structure technologies except I didn't useour  aerospace lithium- aluminum/ carbon technology but substitued  a glass, resin and  LEAD composite....

Good job on the rules. Restricts what you can do but leaves room for class development and progress. Nice

Rumor has it Scot's boat will be on it's way to Aylmer this weekend..... Rick better hurry up or he will not have the first one on the pond this spring!

Open water here and IF we could stir up a few intrepid sailors could be on the water VERY SOON......

Honesty can't ever remember ice out this early in March  - beach in Pincourt was completly ice free tonight

#10 is in Aylmer.  I've posted a few photos.  The hatches are fitted, and it's ready to paint.  The build quality is incredible!!!  Thanks again, Kevin - you are truly a craftsman.  I'm sure the job was made a bit easier by the quality of the hull.

I've used some plexiglass for the hatches.  I'm thinking of leaving them clear.  They're attached with rare earth magnets from LeeValley.  Currently only two corners of each hatch are secured - that may or may not change.

You'll notice the boat is not at my house in the pictures; it's currently at the paint shop.  I may get some updated photos as the painting progresses.  Sorry it's taken me so long to post pics, there have been some changes at work that have kept me (very) busy.

She is going to look good with some paint! Been a slow month so #13, Kevin's glass hull replacement for Big Red, is just getting finished up. Tried something different for the deck skins - 'dyed' resin. Result is a 'translucent' effect rather than a solid colour. Not sure how well it will work on a hull. Problem is the degree of colour and the effect seems to depend on the layup - not completely even for colour consistency. The glass thickness changes the colour density. Nice thing is it adds almost no weight! Only other problem with a dye in the resin is any bubbles become harder to see and work out. If the weather holds plan is to sail next weekend on the Rideau Gardens pond!

If anyone wants to come down drop me an e mail and I will keep you posted on the date and time.

PS will be scale models and sail boats - if it floats, it's welcome:)

Micro Magic looks sharp! Black boats hmmm they look great - just don't leave it in the sun to long8) but....hitting it with a champagne bottle MAY not be a good idea:o maybe you should filter the bubbly first and just sprinkle a little on it

Weather has been dismal this spring and unfortunalty coming Tuesday is our last club meeting before the summer break.

Can't cancel this one - organizing meeting to participate in the Tall Ships event in the Old Port. We will have access to the basin by Bon Secour market for 4 days and YES there will be sailing and YES the Ottawa boys will be invited! looking to hold a M12 regatta on the Saturday and  WILL stage races on the other days.  City is going to great lengths to have us participate, parking should be no issue - overnight storage and security at the site if you want to leave the boat and sail more than one day..... will keep you posted but should be a great event not just for Rc modeling but to see the Tall Ships and visit the Old Port.

Looks like the Tall Ships event is Sept. 13-16; is that correct?  If so, I'll put it on the calendar.  What is the address (for those of us not familiar with the area)?  There are some really beautifull scale boats in Ottawa - I hope we can convince some of their owners to bring them to the event!

Pics of S50 #10 are in the gallery.  Paint color - Bill regularly shows us that green boats are faster... what the heck, I'll try anything!

It's 1lb 1oz overwight with the battery.  I'm certain this is the painters fault - but the paint job is worth it!
